UberX drivers may pick passengers at Los Angeles International Airport starting on Jan. 21, the airport announced this week.
Many have been waiting years for this news. UberX drivers has long been able to drop off passengers at the terminals, but they could not make pickups, and police generally enforced the rules. Some travelers have been taking a free shuttle bus to nearby hotels and hailing an Uber from there, but that's not a great solution.
Mayor Eric Garcetti's administration made changing the rules a priority, and in late December 2015, Lyft became the first rideshare company with proper permits for pickups.
I took a Lyft recently from the main LAX international terminal, and it went well. Just keep two things in mind. First, your driver may need to pick up you at the departures level. And second, you'll have to pay an extra $4 fee on your ride, which goes to the airport.
Uber and Lyft should be big money makers for LAX. During the first two weeks Lyft had permits for pickups and dropoffs, the airport said it counted nearly 50,000 rides. In just two weeks! (The airport says it will invest the revenue into the terminals.)
Are you excited by this development? Will you take an UberX from LAX?
