Do you know how much cargo a United Airlines Boeing 747 can hold?
I ask because last month United's cargo division shattered the carrier's all-time 747 cargo weight record, according to an employee newsletter. The record-breaking shipment came Aug. 21 on Flight 900 - London Heathrow to San Francisco.
Can you guess how many pounds of cargo this aircraft carried?
Leave your guesses in the comments section by Monday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. PT. I will reward the person who guesses closest with a prize - an United Airlines amenity kit. There are two caveats. One, I'll only mail it within the United States. And two, I can only contact you if you leave me a way to reach you.
According to United, Terracotta tiles made up the bulk of the shipment. But the 747 also had some mail as well as a 143-pound dog named Barney.
You may have no idea how much cargo a widebody aircraft can carry. So I'll give you a hint. As of the last week in August, these were the cargo records for three other aircraft types in United's fleet:
- Boeing 777 -- 79,740 lbs. (LHR-IAD on Nov. 27, 2013)
- Boeing 787 -- 61,034 lbs. (LHR-IAH on March 13, 2015)
- Boeing 767 -- 62,150 lbs. (LHR-EWR on March 17, 2015)
