Want to fly to Alaska this summer? Now you have another option - a new flight on JetBlue Airways.
JetBlue will fly between Portland, Ore. and Anchorage from June 18 through Sept. 8. It is selling fares as low as $99, except during a few blackout dates around Independence Day and Labor Day. To buy the cheapest fares, you must book by Jan. 13.
In the business, we call this utilization flying. JetBlue likely will take an airplane that ordinarily spends the night in Portland and send it up to Anchorage each night. There's very little risk in this strategy because usually the plane would be parked overnight and making no money.
The JetBlue aircraft will depart Portland at 8:49 p.m. and arrive in Anchorage at 11:29 p.m. The return flight leaves Anchorage at 11:59 (this 30-minute 'turn time' in Anchorage is aggressive) and arrives back in Portland at 4:35 a.m. So the aircraft will be back in Portland early in the morning to fly its usual U.S routes.
JetBlue also flies to Anchorage from Seattle and Long Beach.
